CDL-Commercial Truck Testing

Requirements for CDL Testing:

  1. CDL Temporary Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) from Michigan Secretary of State (Must be held for at least 14 days).
  2. Valid Michigan Driver's License.
  3. Current Proof of Insurance for truck AND trailer (if applicable).
  4. Current Vehicle Registration for truck AND trailer (if applicable).
  5. Study last 3 chapters of CDL Manual from Michigan Secretary of State.

* NOTE * Due to State of Michigan policy, a 2-day advance notice is required from the time you call to when your test can be scheduled.

Please have the following information when you schedule your CDL driving test:

  1. Name
  2. Phone Number
  3. Driver's License Number
  4. Date of Birth
  5. CDL Type (Class A, B, or C)
  6. CLP Issue Date (first 8 numbers on top of permit)
  7. CLP Expiration Date
  8. Endorsements on CLP

Qualifications for bringing your own truck/trailer:

  1. Must meet DOT inspection specifications
  2. Emergency equipment (triangles, extra fuses, fire extinguisher)
  3. Must NOT be carrying a load
  4. CLASS A test – Combination GVWR over 26,001 lbs. (over 10,001 lbs. for trailer)
  5. CLASS B test – GVWR over 26,001 lbs. (no trailer)

The CDL skills test consists of 3 parts:

  1. Pre-Trip Inspection
  2. Basic Control Skills Test
  3. On-Road Driving Test

You must pass all 3 parts to receive a certificate.
